Did you know that there are over
130 million PREGNANCIES (births)
worldwide per year?
About 4 million in the USA alone!
The making of the BABY-EGG™.
Author/illustrator ANITA cutting out prototypes.

1. Why are there 38 drawings but 40 weeks of pregnancy?

This is due to the window of conception being at about 2 weeks into the menstrual cycle. The weeks of pregnancy are counted from the first day of the last period. By the time one misses the next period we say that the woman is 4 weeks pregnant; but the baby is only about 2 weeks old since it was conceived at about mid-cycle. The number on the baby drawings represents the week of pregnancy. There are 40 weeks of pregnancy and 38 weeks of true age of the baby. (see enclosed instructions with BABY-EGG™)

2. Why are the illustrations not in color?

The originals are pencil line-drawings. The calendar is intended for worldwide distribution. I wanted to stay neutral due to ethnic diversity. Also the fetus has very transparent skin and does not have yet that cozy baby look . In the last trimester the fetus starts to put on some fat. I wanted to focus on the ACTUAL SIZE of the baby and to color the babies would be a distraction to this. Many wonderful photographs do already exist of unborn babies. I did not want to replace the vision you might have of your baby but simply to give you a reference point of its actual size week after week. Now you no longer have to visualize an olive or a plum to get an idea of the baby's size.

3. Why the egg-shape?

The embryo actually starts out with an egg sack. The original drawings showed the cross section of the uterus and the placenta. This again was distracting to the ACTUAL SIZE illustrations. By erasing these details the egg shape presented itself and the BABY-EGG™ was born. The smallest calendar egg is 5.5" and the largest is 14" in length.

4. Is it too late to get a BABY-EGG™ midway through the pregnancy?

Not at all. You will be excited to see how the baby grew over the past few months. Now you can follow its progress until birth.

5. Does BABY-EGG™ replace pregnancy books?

The intention is to give a reference point on the size of the embryo and fetus with LIFE-SIZE illustrations. One per week. BABY-EGG™ is a great companion to any pregnancy book. But it can stand on its own if you do not want to be overwhelmed with lots of info about possible complications and details and you are under good care of a physician.
